Outstanding example of a Victorian sailor's valentine. Double 9 inch octagonal hinged box. Case in excellent condition with fine patina. Traditional heart motif on one side and "For my mother" on opposite side. Beautiful shellwork with all shells intact.

Mahogany box with hook closure, shells, paper, cotton batting shell bed. Probable origin Barbados, circa 1870. Item acquired from well-established maritime arts collector and dealer.
