This antique hand carved and highly ornate box weighs almost 8 pounds. It is a real piece of art. At first I thought the beautiful silvery carvings were plaster but they are not. The exact age is also unknown. All my ebay friends have agreed this box must be mid 1800s to late 1800s. I don't know if the color silver is a silver wash or possibly an aluminum wash if that makes sense. The box measures approximately 18"x11 3/4"x6". It is lined with red velvet. It came from a very old estate here in Central Kansas. We have suspected it to be a salesman sample for a coffin or casket. We even thought it may have been used to store a large book such as bible or the large antique photo albums. It may have been used for linen or important papers. Whether this was made around the Civil War era or Victorian, it is a decent box that deserves a good home. There are a few imperfections where the silvery wash has chipped away. I have given many pictures to help you make a decision if this box is right for you. It never had hinges. The box sits flat and the lid fits strong. The box is sturdy and ready for use.
